STEP BACK IN TIME

By Barbara Nelson

Imagine yourself traveling by caravan for many weeks along Uzbekistan’s Silk Route. Suddenly in the distance the sun strikes the vivid blue dome of Samarkand’s Kok Gumbaz mosque.

In our photography workshop in Uzbekistan, you will experience sights and sounds evoking an earlier time, meet local people who remain connected to their history, and catch the mystery of place and people in this centuries old region of Central Asia.

The workshop will start and end in Tashkent and will include the beautiful Ferghana Valley (just added to the workshop this year). Based in five locations along the Silk Route, we will make side trips and excursions from most locations to discover the local cultures and generally participate in everyday life.

We will photograph in the historic cities along the Silk Route and in private visits to small villages resonating the centuries of culture, tradition, beauty and welcoming people.

Local English-speaking experts versed in the history and culture of their country will inform and guide us to world-famous mosques, madrasis, monuments and sites from the Ottoman Empire and medieval times. We will also visit markets meeting local people and observing craftspeople at work. We will learn the secrets of the old towns and discover the best locations for the most compelling photography.

We photograph daily and some evenings for low light shooting. You will learn new techniques and practice known skills as we explore different environments throughout the workshop.  The days will be organized to allow for importing images for regular reviews and critiques, individually and in the group.
