After kicking off our southwestern Montana culinary road trip in Bozeman, we headed northwest to continue discovering more of the area’s traditional and innovative cuisine and spirits.
Tasting Montana from Butte to Missoula

Juicy steaks, gourmet tacos, and ice cold distilled spirits were just a few of the tasty indulgences that Mr. TWS and I enjoyed in Montana this summer on our “Small Towns, Big Eats” road trip from Bozeman to Missoula. Here’s a taste of Big Sky Country eats, drinks and other highlights in this collection of ten Montana on Instagram photos.
Southwestern Montana evokes visions of bison, cowboys, and vast landscapes, and that has always held an exciting appeal for me on the occasions I’ve traversed the state on road trips. Although a big part of its makeup and well-known allure, that’s not all that Big Sky Country has to offer as Mr. TWS and I recently learned.
By Mr. TWS — On our June visit to Montana, we experienced many highlights, some well-known, and others that were surprises. As I anticipated our short trip and the great itinerary with a variety of locations, interesting food and drink, and diverse activities, horseback riding seemed especially appropriate for enjoying the natural beauty of the area.
By the time I got to Phoenix, the car was covered in dust from blowing desert sands and highway construction. I was a bit dusty myself. I was also hungry — traveling always whets my appetite. And I was happy. Road trips make me smile, and arriving at a place where I’ll be visiting loved ones makes me smile, too.
Panama City Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau has a fun Bucket List program where visitors choose activities in which they want to engage. When they check them off, they receive fun prizes like beach towels and T-shirts. I hope I’ll get a chance to visit and check off some Panama City Beach Bucket List items sometime, too.
