The Drop Vancouver: Art on the Waterfront

The Drop Vancouver

"The Drop Vancouver, Art on the Waterfront at the Convention Centre"

The Drop, Vancouver Convention Center

Having just spent a weekend in Vancouver, British Columbia, I now want to go back and see more of that beautiful city. I was there for the TBEX (Travel Blog Exchange) conference held at the Vancouver Convention Centre which has a terrific location on the waterfront. One of the many things that impressed me about Vancouver is that there are many art galleries and public art exhibitions. In fact, the kickoff party for the conference was at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Shown in this photo is The Drop, a 65 ft tall sculpture located outside of the convention centre overlooking the water. It was created by Inges Idee, a group of German artists and installed in 2009. The Drop represents a droplet of water or rain and is an “homage to the power of nature”, as described by the artists. I think it’s beautiful in color, simplicity and placement on the edge of the seawall.

I’m not an expert on art. I just know what I like. What do you think of The Drop?

We actually get very little icing in the winter. It’s only really cold enough for a couple of weeks a year, and it’s usually pretty dry when it gets that cold. There’s also a lot of ambiant heat downtown.

You got a great shot of The Drop. If you can believe it I hadn’t seen it before – also discovered a few more interesting art pieces further to the east. I need to be a tourist in my hometown more often. I love the colour – on a sunny day. Great to meet you Cathy.

Great shot and it’s making me miss Vancouver and all the gang together! I too loved all the art scattered around the city and definitely need a return visit to fully experience everything Vancouver has to offer. (also, need to get up to NoCal so we can properly hang!)

Great shot, Cathy. I don’t know what it is about Canadian cites, but they all seem to have art like this. People either hate it or love it. In Halifax we have the wave…………I’ll take a pic when I’m home.

Thanks for posting to Travel Photo Thursday.

I love “The Drop” and think it really captures the essence of Vancouver, a city surrounded by water and a city that gets a lot of rain and a very cultural, artistic city. If I ever move back to Canada, I would want to live in Vancouver.

Thanks, all for your comments. Sorry I didn’t get a chance to respond to each of you, but during my trip to Europe right after this post kept me from the computer most of the time 🙂

Yes, TBEX was a great time and I highly recommend it to any of you who are travel bloggers. Next one is in Keystone, Colorado — already bought my ticket!

As for “The Drop”, I really liked it. Glad so many of you do, too!
